New Browser Versions!

This past month saw a look into the future for browsers. Mozilla has introduced Firefox 2.0, while Internet Explorer has introduced it's IE 7. If you don't use Firefox, then you don't need to concern yourself. However, whether you do or not, you will want to upgrade IE 6 to IE 7 as there are many security fixes and improvements (such as add ons, which basically expand IE's functions). One of the biggest improvements were tabs in IE and if you are a Firefox user, you are already familiar with tabs. IE 7 will be pushed to those that have Windows set to automatically update windows. You should get a question asking whether you want to upgrade to the new browser, in which case I highly recommend you do. If you can't wait, you can go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx and download it!

For the Firefox users the new 2.0 is also a welcome. Although the changes are not as great, there are some welcome additions, such as automatic spell checking when entering text into fields and forms on a web page. Also welcome is the ability to go back to a page or tab should you inadvertently close it or should the browser crash. Any text entered will return! How cool is that! The new Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ and a press release is here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/press/mozilla-2006-10-24.html

In general cookies from the originating site adds functionality and convenience for users. For example I use them on my site for returning visitors to the family bulletin board (so you are remembered). I would never however allow third party cookies.

Sandboxie

I spoke of Sandboxie in the last email and why you should consider using it. Sandboxie is a program that allows programs to be "sand boxed" when in use, which essentially protects your system since changes are not written to the hard drive. I have used this program now for awhile and suggest its use, especially if you have kids browsing the Internet. To learn more, go to http://sandboxie.com/.

Tips

Thunderbird Tip!

Use the Hotkey F8 to switch off the email view pane! Try it. Open up Thunderbird and hit the key F8. You will see the email view pane disappear. Push it again to make it return. Use it to delete suspicious email without looking at it!

Firefox Tip!

Try the interface for themes and add ons (previously extensions) by going to Tools/Add-ons and you will see Add Ons and Theme buttons on the top. Try it!
